FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your Questions, Answered

Why do my eyes water if I have dry eye?

It sounds confusing, but dry eyes can trigger reflex tearing. When your eyes sense irritation, they may produce excess tears. However, these tears are mostly water and lack the proper oil and mucus layers needed to properly lubricate your eyes.

Is dry eye a serious condition?

Dry eye is usually not dangerous, but it can become chronic and uncomfortable if untreated. Severe cases may damage the surface of the eye and affect vision. Early treatment helps prevent complications.

Can Dry Eye Be Cured?

In most cases, dry eye is a chronic (long-term) condition, meaning it usually cannot be permanently cured. However, it can be managed very effectively with the right diagnosis and treatment plan.

While over-the-counter drops may temporarily relieve symptoms, long-term improvement depends on identifying and treating the root cause of the problem.

At Essex Dry Eye Clinic, treatment is effective because it focuses on precision diagnosis and targeted therapy, rather than simply masking symptoms.

Can I use dry eye drops instead of having treatment?

Eye drops mainly provide temporary lubrication. Devices like IDRA, TearStim, and Activa focus on:

  • Diagnosing the exact cause

  • Restoring gland function

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Improving natural tear production

For many patients with evaporative dry eye, device-based treatments provide longer-lasting and more meaningful improvement than drops alone.
